A Vision for Alaskans with Disabilities

Key Coalition of Alaska is a non-profit, statewide advocacy organization of people with disabilities, and their families, friends and other supporters. The goal of the Key Coalition is to advocate for community-based services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families. Key Coalition advocates for independent living, equality and disability civil rights, and access to quality mental and physical health care services.

Advocates and self-advocates all over the state work year round to educate local lawmakers and community members about issues facing people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Local chapters of the Key Coalition meet to plan both state and local advocacy efforts.

Key Coalition members:

Educate lawmakers by sharing personal stories.

Advocate for others who cannot speak for themselves.

Raise awareness about the issues on the Annual Key Campaign Platform.

Travel to Juneau to visit state legislators and advocate for the Key Campaign Platform.

Draft letters and Public Opinion Messages (POMs) to Alaska senators and representatives.

What are Community-Based Services?

Community-based services provide vital support for individuals and families. These services allow people to remain in their home community and are far less expensive than costly institutional care and out-of-state placement. Services include:

  • Respite Care
  • In-Home Support
  • Residential Support for Adults
  • Infant Learning Programs
  • Job Training and Employment
  • Specialized Foster Care
  • Home Accessibility Modifications
  • Specialized Medical Equipment
  • Emergency Support

Shared Vision Is Key

In 2018 a monumental piece of legislation, SB174, was placed into state statute. Sponsored by Senator Peter Micciche, the legislation presents a unified vision for lawmakers that mirrors the values of individuals with disabilities, their families and their community members.

“Alaskans share a vision of a flexible system in which each person directs their own supports, based on their strengths and abilities, toward a meaningful life in their home, their job, and their community. Our vision includes supported families, professional staff, and services available throughout the state now and into the future.”
